A few weeks back M.J. Rosenberg of IPF said there’s a “seismic shift” going on in the Jewish community in the U.S. Basically: the conservative Jewish organizations that dominate the lobby are coming out for a two-state solution at last, joining liberal Jewish organizations that have long held that view but been down.
I see the evidence of the shift in the way that the press is softening. National Public Radio has done two excellent pieces by Eric Westervelt about Israeli abuses of Christians and Palestinians in the occupied territories. (Westervelt is clearly a closet lefty; jump in, Eric, the water’s boiling).
Today the Christian Science Monitor has a great piece by two reporters, including Joshua Mitnick, who must be one of my people, in which actual Palestinians actually bitch about Bush’s visit and his “bias” toward Israel. That has to change, they say, for us to believe anything he says.
It used to be that this sort of coverage drew demonstrations outside newspaper offices. Back when Richard Ben Cramer was in the holy land for the Phila. Inquirer. Now there is silence. I do think attitudes are changing subtly. Only the Dershowitzes and Halkins of the world are still defending the occupation. Leadership Jews are attuned to subtle shifts in public opinion.
As Rosenberg has noted, even Dennis Ross is calling for Israel to take concrete steps now re the settlements. American Jews have been embarrassed by Jimmy Carter and Walt & Mearsheimer, and most of all by the neocons; they know the jig is up.
Even George Bush seems angry about the colonies. I mean settlements. I wonder if it’s too late.
